chapter 2 tell it slant reading response..

I enjoyed this chapter mainly because of the section labeled “Situating Yourself in the Family” it talks about how our family is the subject in most of our creative non fiction writings because “they become our first objects of love, anger, and loyalty.” I thought that was true because they are basically the first thing that you really think to write about when talking about creative non fiction writings.

Hemley- Reading History to my Mother

I really enjoyed reading this story because it really shows you how precious your eye sight really is. We all take it for granted and never really take the time to appreciate what we have and eye sight is on of them. “I am here with her now but not. We see each other through veils. We have battled for this moment, and neither sees the other as they would like.” This quote from page 33 really stuck out to me because they can hardly see each other. My question for the classes are: Do you take the time to really appreciate your sight? or even the other senses that God has blessed us all with. Be grateful for what you have.

Where it all began…

My family has always lived in Alabama. It all started with my grand father who moved here back in the early 1980s to start a church, the church that I go to now actually. He lived here as a kid and moved around to a bunch of different places. Always in Alabama though. My grandfather was a bit of an evangelist and would preach all over Alabama. Even when my dad was born, he would still move everywhere just to preach. He finally ended up in Chelsea, Alabama where he started Liberty Baptist in the 80s. When my dad was born he spent the majority of his time in Hartselle Alabama, from the time he was born til he was about 9 or 10. He than moved to Sylagauga where he met my mother. They have been together since he was 12 and she was 11. They got married when my dad was 20 and my mom was 18. My grandfather was preaching at Liberty Baptist at the time and from then on this is where we have been.

Changes That have happened. In Class Assignment.

Liberty Baptist has changed a bit cosmetically. My church has expanded tremendously we have built a whole new building within the past eight years for the younger students, and a whole new section for the babies and a day care center. My church is rapidly expanding for the better and I love it. Some of the changes now as opposed to than when I was younger are very beneficial, but some of the changes, in my opinion, will eventually hurt the church. I have always viewed a church as a place where believers can come together and worship as one, but I feel that this is separating the church a bit. I still love my church and I will do anything that I can to help out.

Giles Reading Response “Reflective Writing and the Revision Process: What Were You Thinking?”

Giles “Reflective wring and Revision process: what were you thinking?” Really tied a long good with chapter 14 in “tell  it slant” especially this quote on page 191 “The first time I had to perform reflective writing myself was in the summer of 2002. And it did feel like a performance, at first.” Thats so true when in comes to reflective writing. it does feel like a performance and i think should because youre reflecting your own writing you should be very attached to it.

Chapter 14 – Tell It Slant

When I read this chalter in tell it slant I really enjoyed it. The section that really jumped out at me was the section labeled as “the punch” (188) I enjoyed this one mainly because of this quote that I found in the first paragraph. “Writers are really musicians, attuned to every rhythm and nuance of their prose.” This quote really stuck out to me because I hear this al the time. My oldest brother loves to write music and than play it to see how good it sounds. He is always talking about how his music has to have nuance or meaning. He always says that his music lacks meaning, which is often the case in writing stuff. I write something but think that it lacks the meaning that it should have. I need to put more meaning into my writings so that the readers or audience will feel what I felt in a certain situation.

The Best Meal Essay

Christmas has always been big in my family, it has always brought us closer as a family through the great food we eat, and the time spent with one another. ever since I was younger, Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. Not only because of the gifts that we give and receive, but because of the birth of Christ and the time we spend with family. I have had a lot of good memories with my family during the Christmas Holidays and the food is always so great.

For as long as I can remember, my mom has always had this huge elaborate breakfast ready to eat after we open presents on Christmas morning. I can remember being really young and wanting to help her cook it but not really being able to do much. I would ask mom if I could help her and she would always tell me that she didn’t want me to burn myself on the oven. I would still always try and help her by setting the table or stirring the cheese into the grits. As a six or seven year old, there just is not much for me to do.

The Food that we eat throughout the holidays are amazing. The home made goodies and the candies that my family makes are quite the treat. My aunt makes these golden graham brownies with marshmallow and Hershey’s chocolate. My mom makes white trash and my grandmothers potato candy are three of my favorite things that I eat. But no candy, brownie or meal even compares with one. Christmas morning breakfast, the most amazing meal that I eat all year. Even better than thanksgiving. Everything that we eat is completely homemade. We eat cheese grits with a lot of Franks hot sauce in it, orange rolls with a home made orange glaze, cinnamon rolls, breakfast casserole, with sausage cheese and egg all in it, my sisters famous brown sugar bacon, which is my favorite thing about the whole entire meal, and about fifteen to twenty scrambled eggs with cheese in it. My mom also makes her own orange juice with fresh oranges that is really good.

As I grow older, there is a lot that I can do to help prepare the Big breakfast. I can now help put things in and take things out of the oven, I can still help set the table, and I can even run to the grocery store for if anyone needs anything. I can also stir the sharp cheddar cheese into the grits and help make the breakfast casserole. I have always enjoyed cooking and helping my mom around the kitchen. She has showed me a lot in the kitchen. I am actually a pretty good cook now. I can follow a recipe and make something taste pretty darn good.

When I was in the tenth grade something happened on Christmas morning, something that I will never forget. My best friend was on his way to see his grandmother when it started to snow. He was driving the speed limit but the roads were a little bit icy and wet. He went over a hill and started to hydroplane in his truck. The truck flipped twice and it finally landed upside down. I remember the phone call that we got from my friends mom, she said that he didn’t have a scratch on him at all. I was so thankful for that.

This particular meal has impacted my life so much. Being with my family on what I think the most amazing Holiday of the year. Not only because of the giving of gifts, eating the amazing food or the seeing friends and family, but the fact that it was the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So many people look past that aspect of Christmas and what it is actually celebrating.

Christmas in my family has a lot of traditions. Every year we draw names in a hat and get each other gifts. My grandfather always reads the story of Jesus’s birth and “’twas the night before Christmas”. I am very blessed to be in the family that I am in. The love, the kindness, and the great food that I have received throughout the years has been amazing. I only pray that my kids will receive the same traditions that have been passed on.

Place as it Is now

The only place that hasn’t changed at all since I was younger, is my church. I have been going to Liberty Baptist church in Chelsea Alabama since I was born. I was raised in that church and I have loved every single moment of it. My grandfather was the preacher from like 1985 to the late 90s. He basically built that church and to this day they still run he how he did so many years ago. Everybody that has gone there since I was really young still go there now. Everybody there knows me by name, my mom is the pianist there and my dad does the sound for the music. I know when I go home, that I will always have a place to go in my church. A place that has never changed to me.

I do not really care where I retire from to be honest I just want to retire. I want to live a life with no worries like I was younger. I do not want single care in the world I want to live a care free life.

Place I used to know

The place that I used to know were the woods. Growing up basically in the middle of no where, I remember always playing out in the woods. Building tree houses with my two brothers and my friends, we would be out there all day. I can remember blazing bicycle trails leading to the highway about a mile through the woods. I miss those good old days with no worries and the only care was whether I was going to make back in time for dinner on time. I was homeschooled until the 10th grade so we would always try to finish school really early so that we got to go outside and play. I would always try and be Tarzan climbing trees, and walking around the woods barefoot. I was a dumb little kid. The woods have always been a place where I can go to just get away from the world. It always reminds me of growing up and the special childhood that I cherish.
